You probably know Gibson for his sci-fi (and if not, pick up Neuromancer immediately), but his essays are also worth reading. As he explains in his intro, for a hardcore novelist like him, each piece of truth-telling is an exercise in weird fiction -- and it shows. Worth buying for the Steely Dan album review alone!

Our narrator, Julia, is 11 years old when the world changes forever. It's October, and time suddenly becomes elastic. One day, for no apparent reason, a day is suddenly 25 hours long. Three days later, 25:37, and they continue to stretch. This novel has the feel of an apocalyptic To Kill a Mockingbird or a more sober True Grit, with a knowing, worldly voice-over guiding the reader through the moment in her childhood that everything changed. Understated, odd, and haunting.

This one is for fans of Girls in White Dresses, A Fortunate Age, and other girl-in-the-city novels. Sybil Weatherfield has a name made for bylines and the neuroses to match. She's 30 years old in New York, dating the wrong guy, not-dating the guy who could be the right one, and living at the mercy of her own snarky apathy. It sounds like it would be really irritating, right? But somehow the genuine moments balance out the snark, and even the snark is entertaining.

Fans of horror and apocalypse will be delighted by Whitehead's vision of an overrun U.S. complete with zombies both terrifying and pitiful; fans of literature will revel in his linguistic flights of fancy and wry commentary on society. His dad disappears every night, he's probably going to get his butt kicked weekly (if not daily) by the local jock brigade, and every time he talks to the girl of his dreams he gets a nosebleed. Angelella has written a truly surprising, frequently sinister, and very clever YA novel that I enjoyed so much, I picked it for our July book group. Brian Francis Slattery has written another apocalypse novel, and I for one hope he never stops. It's an incredibly timely and moving meditation on war -- who and what do we fight for? You should read this novel partly because it will make you think, and partly because it is surprising, but mostly because it's brilliant. Ball has created an intense portrait of a family being torn apart by war without giving any details other than those of the characters themselves--the war, their city, their country, all are unspecified, making the book a universal cry against political violence. But William and Molly, father and daughter, are achingly familiar, and their story will catch you and hold you captive. The Curfew is a short, precise, and haunting masterpiece.

From what people keep telling me, if you read and liked The Virgin Suicides then you will like this book. I haven’t read that (although i do have deep lurve for Eugenides) and I liked it anyway. It’s a collective first person narrative of a group of guys, ranging from their high-school years to middle-age, contemplating a girl who goes missing and what might have happened to her. It’s paced particularly well — things loop back and forth throughout, feeding you bits and pieces and leaving you to try and put the pieces together before it suddenly all clicks into place. It also reminds me a bit of Room in that it takes a terrible event, and discusses it in an intelligent and unique way while avoiding sensationalism.
